Apple iPod Nano 5th Generation Review and Features
At Apple’s September 9, 2009 event, a fifth-generation iPod Nano was unveiled with reduced prices on the larger model (at the time of release, the 8 GB was priced at $149 and the 16 GB at $179), a larger, 56.3 millimetres (2.22 in) diagonal screen (up from 50.8 millimetres (2.00 in) in third and fourth generation iPod Nanos), which was also wider.
The iPod Nano 5th gen was special in so many ways. It was the first iPod or portable media player with some unique features.
- An integrated video camera with 15 special effects
- A microphone
- FM radio with iTunes tagging (via RDS) multiple radio regions, including the Americas, Asia, Australia, Europe, and Japan. A wired headset is needed for FM radio functionality.
- A loudspeaker
- Built-in Pedometer
As well as continuing to support picture viewing and video playback, it included Live Pause, a built-in pedometer, Nike+iPod Support and a speaker. This model also had the Genius Mix feature installed.
The headphone jack and dock connector swapped locations so that the headphone jack was to the left of the dock connector. Therefore, the fifth generation iPod Nano used a different Apple Universal Dock insert than the fourth generation.
The fifth-generation iPod Nano had nine finishes: Silver, Black, Purple, Blue, Yellow, Orange, Product Red, Green, and Pink. All had a glossier, shinier finish than the fourth generation. Like the fourth-generation iPod Nano, Product Red Nano was only available in the Apple Online Store and the Apple Retail Store.
This generation was discontinued on September 1, 2010.

SIM SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) is a small card that contains mobile network subscriber's account information. This allows the phone using the card to attach to a mobile network. The SIM card is most commonly associated with GSM and UMTS mobile networks. Moving a SIM card from one phone to another allows a subscriber to switch mobile phones without having to contact their mobile network carrier. SIM cards can also be used by a phone to store limited amounts of data, such as phone numbers and text messages. | No SIM |
